League of National German Jews (Verband national deutscher Juden)
A Jewish-German organisation founded in 1921 in Berlin under the leadership of attorney Max Naumann, who was also a German army officer. The league, also known as the "Naumann group", urged German Jews to integrate fully into the German people and state, opposed any indication of Jewish nationhood, stressed German patriotism, and criticised the Central Association (CV) for calling too much attention to Jewishness and treating Zionism too tolerantly. Throughout its years of existence, the league maintained a small membership and failed to erode the strength of the CV. In the first few months of Nazi rule, its leaders attempted - unsuccessfully - to interact with the heads of the Nazi government by expressing loyalty to it. The league disintegrated in the mid-1930s after the regime placed its activities under severe restrictions.
